The Sgian Dubh ("black knife") takes its name from the use of the word "black" meaning secret or covert as in "blackmail"; invariably hidden, a concealed weapon, only to be exhibited in the presence of a host out of courtesy, and thus placed in the wearer's hose in an obvious position.
